Irish eyes smile during the middle of March. Scottish eyes smile near the end of August.

The sons and daughters of the former group wear their green around St. Patrick’s Day. The dancers and pipers of the latter wear their tartan plaids for the long-running Capital District Scottish Games, held in late summer.

This year’s Games take place Saturday and Sunday at the Altamont Fairgrounds. Piping, drumming and dancing are on the agenda. Stage bands, exhibits by Scottish clans and societies and jewelry and gift sales are other planned diversions.

In 1952, the accent was on dancing, music and Scottish dress. Foot races, a tug-o-war, pony rides and the traditional caber toss — the heavy, 14-foot long pole — were part of the day. Shortbread, oatcakes, hot dogs and Scottish pies helped keep appetites in check.

About 3,000 people were expected for the party, held at the former American Locomotive Club at the end of Van Vranken Avenue.

Among them were Harry Bayliss, the band marshal for the Games. Harry was a drum major of the British Empire War Veterans Pipe Band and also had served as treasurer of the British War Veterans since the group formed in 1931. Dancers Glenda Black and Ivan Liscum were among bonny dancers looking for medals. At 8, Grace Graham was one of the youngest steppers in the camp.

Others were traveling to the festival. Guests included members of the Rhode Island Highlanders, Connecticut’s Manchester Pipe Band and the Yonkers Kiltie Band.

James Jamieson wore the chairman’s hat. Helpers included Harry McCartney, Robert Dunlop, Campbell MacRae and Robert Ferguson.
