— One state agency is criticizing another for not properly overseeing the cleanup of a Waterford tire dump that caught fire in 2002.

State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli’s office has concluded the Department of Environmental Conservation failed to track progress of the cleanup of Mohawk Tire Storage Facility after the fire.

The privately owned dump contains millions of tires and their melted remnants from a small portion of the site that burned in March 2002.

The audit released today includes a plan by DEC Commissioner Pete Grannis to step up efforts at tire dumps around the state by 2010.

The audit faults Grannis’ predecessors for not tracking the progress of the cleanup. It covered the period from Sept. 12, 2004, to Sept. 30, 2006.

Grannis’ response to the audit includes data that 126 sites containing approximately 31.8 million waste tires had been identified in the state and of those, 57 sites have been abated since a cleanup plan was put into action in 2004.

He said progress is being made in cleaning up the remaining sites.
