FONDA — Hundreds of youths will descend on Fonda Wednesday for an event organizers hope they’ll remember.

The Montgomery County Youth Bureau is celebrating its 30th anniversary with events throughout the day planned next to the county’s Annex Building on Park Street in the village.

County Youth Bureau Director Jennifer Petteys said its planned as more of a fund day for youngsters than a celebration of the organization’s three-decade milestone.

Youth bureaus throughout the state provide funding for programs without regard to the participants’ financial status, and they represent one of the broadest ongoing efforts directed toward young people up to age 21.

“Obviously, we’re here to celebrate the fact that we want these youth to be part of Montgomery County in the future so we want an event to remember. Maybe they won’t leave,” Petteys said.

Events will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the evening will conclude following an after dark showing of “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” to be projected on the city of Amsterdam’s 25-foot projection screen.

Young people attending the event will get a chance to win a variety of prizes, including a Nintendo Wii video game, an Xbox 360, six bicycles and other gifts, Petteys said.

“We are giving away some excellent prizes,” Petteys said.

There will be a rock climbing wall, inflatable obstacle courses and a disc jockey with a Karaoke competition, Petteys said.

Youth will also get to participate in wiffle ball and volleyball competitions, Petteys said.

Petteys said a ceremony slated for 1 p.m. will include recognition for past directors of the county’s Youth Bureau and for other officials including Assemblyman George Amedore Jr., one of the event’s sponsors.

Other features in the day’s events include an inflatable jousting competition, a scavenger hunt, a petting zoo, a skate park from the National Guard Counterdrug Taskforce, demonstrations by law enforcement agencies, a LifeNet helicopter, a CSX Railroad safety display and food vendors. Entry is free, and youth eat for free as well.

The event will take place at the Montgomery County Annex Building on Park street just west of the Fonda Fairgrounds.
