— After embarking on a Capital Region acquisition spree four years ago, a building design document management firm has moved on to Syracuse to fill a “gaping hole” in its upstate coverage area.

Binghamton-based Dataflow announced Wednesday its acquisition of Liverpool Blueprint, a rival firm in Syracuse that also copies, scans and archives documents for developers.

The Liverpool deal marks Dataflow’s first acquisition since it two years ago picked up WL Coultry’s in Albany, which has become the company’s largest market. In 2004, Dataflow bought National Direct Reprographics, a Rotterdam supplier of engineering equipment such as paper, toner and ink for wide-format copiers, plotters and printers.

Although Dataflow serves the construction industry, it has not been hit hard by the nation’s housing slump because many of its clients are commercial builders or state agencies. The past six months were Dataflow’s best six-month period in its 50-year history, said Dataflow Managing Director Victor Gomez.

“We’re doing better than holding our head over water. We’re expanding rapidly,” Gomez said.

Dataflow, which employs over 60 statewide, picked up three employees from Liverpool. In Albany, it employs 15.

The family-owned business maintained only a single operation in Binghamton until 1996, when its second generation of owners acquired an Ithaca competitor. It now has 10 offices statewide.

Even though Dataflow is turning its attention away from the Capital Region with the Liverpool deal, Gomez said the company plans to grow further around Albany. It wants to hire more workers and move to a facility larger than its 12,000-square-foot operation on Fuller Avenue.

“There’s still a lot to be done here in the Capital Region. It’s become our largest operation by far,” Gomez said.
