ALBANY — Sentencing for Aaron R. Dare, the former head of the Urban League of Northeastern New York, was adjourned in federal court on Thursday because Dare has been hospitalized.

Dare, 37, who suffers from congestive heart failure, was admitted to Albany Medical Center on Wednesday afternoon for heart problems, according to his attorney, Arnold Proskin.

U.S. District Judge Lawrence E. Kahn, who received a copy of a report from the hospital about Dare’s latest medical status, adjourned the sentencing until Aug. 14.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas A. Capezza said prosecutors had no choice but to consent: “We have done our best to confirm the circumstances, and we’ll be ready to sentence in August.”

Proskin said he spoke to Dare on Thursday morning, who told him, “Mr. Proskin, if you want me to, I will tell them [the hospital] I am going down to be sentenced.”

Adjournments because of health problems are out of his control, said Proskin, who said that Dare’s health has deteriorated in the past couple of months.

The federal Bureau of Prisons has said it can provide appropriate care during Dare’s incarceration, which is recommended to be 63 to 78 months, according to a sentencing memo filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Dare, 37, pleaded guilty in November 2006 to federal charges of fraud and conspiracy stemming from more than $8 million in federal loans used in a scheme to obtain financing for housing projects.

He is also facing dozens of felony charges in Albany County for real estate grand larceny and money laundering as part of a real estate scheme.
