ALBANY Three years after consumer electronics giant Bose Corp. shopped around Albany for a product and technical support call center, the retailer is returning to open its first Capital Region store at the Colonie Center.
Framingham, Mass.-based Bose will open a 2,500-square-foot retail store near the mall’s Coffee Beanery in late September. The audio technology company’s closest store is currently in Manchester, Vt.
Bose is entering the region’s specialty electronics market a year after REX Stores Corp. and Tweeter Home Entertainment Group pulled out of it. Slammed by intense competition for flat-screen televisions sales, Dayton, Ohio-based REX last fall closed REX TV & Appliances stores in Latham, Saratoga Springs, Rensselaer and Rotterdam. Canton, Mass.-based Tweeter pulled out of the entire New York market, closing underperforming stores in Albany and Saratoga Springs.
In 2005, Bose eyed Albany and Corning as prospective places for a product and technical support call center, which would have employed more than 150. But the company ultimately decided to establish that operation in its headquarters near Boston rather than develop a new facility.
“We don’t currently have a store that serves the Albany market,” Bose spokesman Jon Previtera said in an e-mail. "As shopping for consumer electronics becomes more confusing, we find that customers really appreciate a store where they can experience home entertainment and personal audio products for themselves. … We wanted to bring that experience to Albany.”
