SCHENECTADY One of the two men accused of leading a large drug ring was sentenced to 15 years in prison this afternoon on a federal gun charge.
Oscar Mora, 30, of Plank Road, Waterford, was sentenced this afternoon, one day before he is expected to plead guilty to charges tied to his alleged role as the head of a drug ring that brought cocaine and heroin into the city. Mora's attorney in the federal case, Brian Mercy, said in court today that he expects his client to receive a sentence of as little as an additional five years for his plea Tuesday in Schenectady County Court.
Mora was among 24 people indicted by a Schenectady County grand jury of drug charges in May and is accused of leading the drug ring with Kerry Kirkem.
Mora was indicted by a federal grand jury on the gun charge in August, accused of possessing a .45-caliber Glock handgun at a Watervilet address. He admitted to the crime in September, with the promise of a recommended lighter sentence if he cooperated with investigators.
Federal prosecutors, however, said in court papers that Mora breached the cooperation agreement and never intended to cease his drug operation. Instead, prosecutors speculated that the help Mora did provide was given with the aim to take out competitors in the drug trade for the benefit of his own operation.
