— Two men drowned in separate incidents over the weekend in the Mayfield section of Great Sacandaga Lake.

Charles Speakman, 54, of Broadalbin, died Sunday evening after falling from a fishing boat near Shady Bay in the town of Mayfield.

State police Sr. Inv. Karl Meybaum said it appears Speakman hit his head when he was thrown from the boat as its driver, Richard Wells, was making a sharp turn. Meybaum said it is believed Speakman was unconscious when he drowned, but it has not been determined whether Speakman struck his head on the boat or on a rock.

Speakman was one of five men fishing in the 16-foot boat around 6:30 p.m. and one of two who were thrown from the boat; the other passenger thrown from the boat was able to swim back to it.

Meybaum said Speakman was pulled from the water by his friends and was taken to Nathan Littauer Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Wells, 49, of Broadalbin, was charged with boating while intoxicated and having too few personal flotation devices in the boat. He was arraigned in Town Court, where bail was set at $2,500.

In a Saturday incident, Christian Petrocine, 30, of Westerlo, drowned about 3:30 p.m. while attempting to swim from a boat to Beacon Island, a distance of about 100 feet. Beacon Island is located just off Kunkel Point in Mayfield.

A boater observed Petrocine in distress and was able to pull him from about seven feet of water, but attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. Meybaum said Petrocine may have been submerged between five and 10 minutes.

Petrocine was also taken to Nathan Littauer Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
