— State police were called to the scenes of two separate drowning incidents over the weekend in the Mayfield section of Great Sacandaga Lake.

Charles Speakman, 54, of Broadalbin, died Sunday evening after falling from a fishing boat near Shady Bay in the town of Mayfield.

State police arrested the operator of that boat, Richard Wells, 49, of Broadalbin, on charges of boating while intoxicated and having too few personal flotation devices in the boat.

Wells was arraigned in Town Court, where bail was set at $2,500.

Senior Investigator Karl Meybaum said it appears Speakman hit his head when he was thrown from the boat as Wells turned sharply. Meybaum said it has not been determined whether Speakman struck his head on the boat or on a rock.

Speakman was one of five men fishing in the 16-foot boat around 6:30 p.m. Another passenger thrown from the boat was able to swim back to it, police said.

Meybaum said it is believed Speakman was unconscious when he drowned. He was pulled from the water by his friends and was taken to Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville, where he was pronounced dead.

In a Saturday incident, Christian Petrocine, 30, of Westerlo, drowned about 3:30 p.m. while attempting to swim from a boat to Beacon Island, a distance of about 100 feet. Beacon Island is located just off Kunkel Point in Mayfield.

A boater observed Petrocine in distress and was able to pull him from about seven feet of water. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. Meybaum said Petrocine may have been submerged from five to 10 minutes.

He was also taken to the Gloversville hospital, where he was pronounced dead, state police said.
