SCHENECTADY — A former Brooklyn man has been identified as the victim gunned down in front of the Mont Pleasant Bakery on Crane Street Sunday night, the city’s third gunshot killing of the year.

Andre D. Green, 20, was slain in a hail of bullets just before 9:30 p.m., falling in front of the bakery.

He had lived in Schenectady off and on for the past two years, and records show he was in and out of the Schenectady County Jail for a series of minor offenses.

A memorial sprang up in front of the bakery shop by Monday afternoon, with votive candles and flowers near a telephone pole. A group of people gathered nearby. A man there declined to comment other than to say they were respecting the family.

Authorities said Monday they have received little information about why the shooting happened.

“There have been people who we’ve spoken to who have told us what they’ve seen,” police department spokesman Lt. Brian Kilcullen said, “and we believe they’ve been forthcoming with what they know.”

But, he said, no one has been able to tell them the big picture.

Police were called to the scene at 9:21 p.m. after receiving numerous calls reporting a man being shot in the area of 1006 Crane St. They arrived to find Green lying in front of the bakery with multiple gunshot wounds. Authorities found five or six shell casings near the body.

Green was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to Ellis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities did not say how many bullets hit their target, but autopsy results found two bullets could have been independently fatal.

Green has had a series of arrests in recent years, records show. He had been to the jail five times since November 2006, the most recent time in February.

His most recent interaction, in April, did not result in an arrest, but a chase.

Schenectady County Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Kennedy spotted Green April 7 allegedly running a stop sign at Paige and Strong Streets and recognized him as someone who didn’t have a license, Kennedy said then.

But the driver took off, going down Strong to Craig Street, then over the bridge. The chase ended on Oakwood Avenue, with the driver fleeing on foot. Kennedy identified the driver as Green, saying warrants were issued.

Green was also arrested in February, charged with misdemeanor criminal possession of a controlled substance. He was accused then, also after a traffic stop, of possessing two baggie corners of crack cocaine at Craig and Stanley streets Feb. 5.

He was charged with misdemeanor assault in November, accused of hitting a woman with an open hand, causing a cut to her lip, according to papers filed in court. The status of that case was unclear.

Green’s death follows one eight days earlier on Becker Street, near Elder Street. Foday Kpoto, 18, of Maryland, was shot in the head, falling against a chain-link fence.

Kilcullen said there was no indication Kpoto’s killing and Green’s were related.

The other gunshot killing was in April on Bridge Street when Anthony M. Brown was gunned down. Eshon Guy, 32, has been charged in Brown’s death.
