— Indictments were unsealed this morning accusing 19 people of taking part in a drug operation that sold marijuana and cocaine in Albany and Schenectady.

The indictments are the result of an investgation spearheaded by the state Attorney General's office. Details of the investigation will be released at a 2 p.m. news conference in Albany, but officials said the latest indictments are not related to 24 indictments announced last month in the case of an alleged drug ring that brought cocaine and heroin to the area from Long Island. In fact, officials said this latest operation was much larger.

Among those charged in this morning's indictments are Walter Smiley, 35, of Rotterdam, the alleged head of the operation, who was charged last week with possessing more than 10 pounds of marijuana and 18 ounces of cocaine. Smiley was arraigned this morning on 14 additional counts of drug possession and sale and returned to the Schenectady County Jail, where he was being held after last week's arrest.

Smiley's arrest last week followed a raid at 2761 Broadway that was part of a state police C-NET operation. At the time, John Prizzia, the assistant attorney general prosecuting the case, hinted the arrest was part of a larger organization. Prizzia indicated at that time that wiretaps were used and at least one alleged shipment linked to Smiley and containing as much as 2 kilograms of cocaine was intercepted March 2 by investigators.

The operation was bringing shipments of about two kilos of cocaine from the New York City area about once a month, as well as monthly shipments of marijuana ranging from 10 to 24, according to the new indictments. The cocaine was being sold in Schenectady, according to the indictments, while the marijuana was being sold in Schenectady and Albany.

Police seized nine kilos of cocaine and 140 pounds of marijuana, officials said, the largest local seizure of drugs in many years.
