AMSTERDAM Fort Plain only had two extra-base hits on Wednesday, but it seemed like a lot more.
That’s what happens when you steal bases with impunity — even a bunt single becomes a de facto double.
The Hilltoppers (26-3) stole nine bases to go along with 12 hits and beat Brushton Moira of Section X, 11-1, at Shuttleworth Park to advance to the Class C state semifinals in Binghamton on Saturday, when they will face Thomas Edison of Section IV at 1 p.m.
Shortstop Dustin Baker, who threw a no-hitter in the regionals on Monday, started the stampede on the basepaths on Wednesday with a walk and a stolen base in the first inning. He scored on
Tyler Barhydt’s double to left field to tie it at 1-1, and Barhydt scored on the first of three singles by Jim Thomas.
“Once we saw that we could steal the first time, we just kept right on going,” Fort Plain head coach Craig Phillips said.
“He had a decent arm, but we had pretty good jumps on him,” third baseman Adam Cutspec said of B-M catcher Lucas King. “And it seemed like he hesitated a lot, so we definitely took advantage of that. That’s a big key, getting a guy in scoring position.
“Those throws, it’s like they weren’t there today,” B-M head coach Missy Hastings-Levine said. “That played a big part. The first one usually gets nailed at second, and that’s it.”
The Hilltoppers’ other extra-base hit was Cutspec’s rocket home run to straightaway center field with
Elijah Braemer on base. That made it 5-1, and with Dan Wiecek settling into a nice groove on the mound, the game was pretty much decided at that point.
Cutspec waited for a juicy fastball from Justin Supernault and got all of it.
“Yeah, fastball right down the middle,” he said. “I was sitting on the fastball. I figured I’d adjust to the curve and sit fastball the whole time, and I got one right there. And I did as much as I could with it.”
Wiecek got the start on the mound to rest Baker and Cutspec for the weekend, and he settled down to allow three scattered singles after the first inning.
He had 11 strikeouts, with at least two in each of the third through sixth innings.
Wiecek held Brushton Moira to one run, despite the fact that the Panthers had a runner in scoring position in every inning except the fifth.
“A couple big things happened today,” Phillips said. “Dustin and Adam didn’t have to pitch, so we’ll have both of them for the weekend. Danny can probably give us some innings, and hopefully, we’ll get Eric Kuntzsch back in our lineup, because we miss him. He sprained his ankle at home plate.
“He [Wiecek] didn’t have the fastball, so the changeup and curveball were very good pitches.”
“The way he ate innings up was good for us,” Cutspec said. “The first couple of innings, he didn’t have it, then he found it and was dominant for the last few innings.”
Barhydt and Thomas were each 3-for-4 for Fort Plain, and Braemer had two singles.
Although Cutspec’s home run was the big play in the second, the Hilltoppers had three stolen bases in that inning.
With an 8-1 lead, Fort Plain didn’t let up. In the sixth, Brad Bowers had a bunt single, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Braemer’s single to start a three-run inning.
“It’s just a great tribute to a bunch of great kids,” Phillips said. “Adam and Ryan Hudyncia have been on the varsity for four years. You know what their record is? Ninety-seven wins and 16 losses. I don’t think you’ll find anybody in Section II that can say that. They’re such great kids. Nobody cares about who gets the glory. They just go out and play. The only person that’s ever nervous is me. They just play like it’s a job and come in and get it done.”
If the Hilltoppers win the first game on Saturday, they’ll have to come right back and play again at 4 p.m., which they did last year to win the state championship.
“We’ve got a big target on our back, but that’s the way we like it,” Cutspec said. “We always want the other team’s best. But we’ve got to take the first game and see what happens, but experience is definitely going to help us.
“It’s tough playing those two games, but knowing the whole scenery and knowing how much pressure’s involved, that’s all going to help.”
In other regional games,
Chatham beat Potsdam in Class B, 9-1, and Crown Point beat Fort Ann, 12-8, in Class D.
Chatham will play Christian Brothers Academy of Syracuse at
1 p.m. Saturday at Broome Community College.
