GLOVERSVILLE — City police have accused five men of breaking into several vacant buildings, setting fire to one and stealing copper from another.

While the other defendants were charged with burglary and trespassing, Jerome Fonda, 22, of Fondacres Road, Northville, was charged Tuesday with third-degree arson. Police said Fonda started a fire on the floor of a vacant home at 45 Grand St. on April 17. The fire spread and caused significant damage, police said, and the house was later condemned and demolished.

Police said the youths were using the building as a party venue.

Ryan M. Walker, 17, of Spring Street, was charged with trespassing in that incident and was also charged with trespassing for allegedly entering buildings June 16 at 185 N. Main St. -- the same day a fire started there -- and 181 N. Main St.

Andrew Thompson, 16, of Fourth Avenue, was also charged with trespassing at 185 N. Main St., and Thompson, Jonathan Vouga, 16, of Fourth Avenue, and Timothy Belden, 19, who was listed as homeless, were charged with third-degree burglary and petty larceny for allegedly entering 181 N. Main St. on June 16 and salvaging copper.

Vouga and Thompson were also arrested Tuesday, while Belden was picked up June 18.

Most of the defendants were released on appearance tickets.

Police said their investigation is continuing and more arrests are expected.
