Sophomore attackman Mark Panneton and the rest of Niskayuna’s starters were in an offensive mood Friday night.
Panneton had another big game against Columbia with five goals, and Jared Franze and Steve D’Amario both delivered four as the Silver Warriors continued their Section II Class A quarterfinal mastery of the Blue Devils with a 14-3 triumph.
“In our last three practices, our offense looked extremely sharp. They shot the ball well, read the defense and got in the right spots,” Niskayuna coach Mike Vorgang said after his nationally ranked team went to 19-0. “While that doesn’t always carry over to the game, it did tonight.”
“We had a great week of practice,” said Franze, a junior attackman who notched three of his four goals and assisted on another in the opening frame. “It was really intense, and we were all excited. We were ready to come in and play.”
That was apparent right from the start, when top-seeded Niskayuna rattled off six unanswered goals in the first quarter. Panneton played a major role in a put-away second quarter, notching four of his five goals to help the three-time defending Class A champs open up an 11-1 advantage.
“He’s got great hands,” Vorgang said of the 5-foot-7, 145-pound Panneton. “When he gets the ball on the back side and does what he’s been taught to do, he’s deadly.”
Panneton had the best game of his young career earlier in the season in a 17-9 win at Columbia with eight goals and an assist. He also had one of Niskayuna’s 10 assists in Friday’s rematch.
“Their [Columbia’s] defense slides from the crease very early. I followed my man, and our midfielders found me,” Panneton said of Dan McKinney and Seth Berggren, who combined for six assists. “I was in the right place at the right time. It was fun.”
This wasn’t the first time Niskayuna had a bunch of fun in a sectional game at Columbia’s expense. In the last quarterfinal meeting between the teams in 2004, Niskayuna rolled to a 22-1 victory. The year before that, Niskayuna also romped in the quarters, 15-2, en route to one of its seven Section II titles.
“We just tried to move the ball as quick as possible, and we tried to get as close to the goal as possible,” Panneton said. “We read their slides real well. We just executed.
“We had a bye in the first round,” he added. “And that gave us one more practice that the other teams didn’t have. That was good for us. I think it helped us prepare.”
Niskayuna generated six of its goals in man-up situations, getting two apiece from Panneton, Franze and Massachusetts-bound D’Amario. Franze scored the game’s first goal while Niskayuna had a man advantage, and Franze and D’Amario extended the Silver Warriors’ lead to 13-1 in the third period with man-up tallies.
“Coach said they’d have penalties and we were going to have opportunities,” said Franze. “When we had the ball, we had to score on them.”
“We had six man-up goals in the first game with them, too,” Vorgang said. “That was execution. We were able to skip the ball to the open man on the back side.”
Niskayuna will play Colonie
(No. 4 seed, 15-4) in a semifinal game Tuesday at 7:30 at RPI. Colonie beat Christian Brothers Academy in its quarterfinal, 14-7, for its seventh straight win since losing at Niskayuna back on May 9, 7-4.
“For the most part we’ve had tough games, and we expect another,” Vorgang said. “They [Colonie] are well-coached, disciplined and they’ll play hard. They’ll want to win just as bad as we do.”
Niskayuna came into Friday’s game with a No. 18 STX/Inside Lacrosse national ranking, and as one of four unbeaten teams remaining in New York state.
Casey Balzer had a hand in all three Columbia (No. 9 seed, 11-9) goals, scoring once and setting up two by Brett Sarubbi.
