Albany man killed in fiery Thruway crash
Updated 10:54 a.m.
ALBANY An Albany man was killed late Wednesday in a crash near Exit 24 on the New York State Thruway as he was making an illegal U-turn, state police said this morning.
Raymond M. Gaidusek, 48, was attempting to turn into the westbound lanes about 9:15 p.m. when his pickup truck was struck by a tractor-trailer and burst into flames. Gaidusek was partially ejected, but troopers still had to extricate him from his truck.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, Raymond E. Maxim, 63, of Utica, suffered minor injuries after his truck also caught fire.
Albany Fire Department doused the flames, but troopers said both vehicles were destroyed. Firefighters had to call in a tanker truck from Albany International Airport after running out of water while battling the blaze.
About 150 gallons of diesel fuel was spilled from the tractor-trailer, which was hauling pallets of bottled water.
All westbound lanes were closed for several hours, and at least one lane remained closed this morning, officials said.
The investigation is continuing, troopers said.
