Well isn’t dry at Maple Hill
Maple Hill coach Mark Bubniak thinks the coaches around the league may be giving his team too much respect.
“At our league meeting, all the other coaches said they were playing for second,” said Bubniak. “The way I look at it, we’re 0-0, just like everyone else, and we lost five
But it’s what the Wildcats have back that worries the rest of the league.
Maple Hill rolled through the league with a 16-0 record last year, and won the Class C championship before losing to Watervliet in the CC/C playoff. But the Wildcats were so balanced that no one
averaged 10 points per game.
Two of the top contributors last year, guard Meeghan Arno and center Katie Roth, are back, and both are sophomores.
The key to Maple Hill’s success this year will be Roth.
“Last year, she was our sixth girl,” said Bubniak of the 6-foot-1 Roth. “But no one knew about her because she never played jayvees. She went right from modified to varsity. But she played AAU over the summer and went to some camps, and now, everyone knows about her, and the other girls will have to step up.”
There is a ton of experience around the league. Greenville returns nine seniors, and Rensselaer coach Jeff Palmer has his entire team back. “We have a deep team that should have a strong, experienced bench,” said Palmer.
Greenville’s offense will revolve around senior center Toressa Young and senior forward Tyler Winnie.
Dave Albright takes over at Coxsackie-Athens and inherits one of the league’s top players in 6-0
senior Jillian Stippa, who was a first-team all-star last year.
Although Cairo-Durham went
0-16 in the league last year, Samantha Spohler was a second-team all-star and Casie Duncan was one of the top three-point shooters in the league.
Brian Smith hopes to play an up-tempo offense at Catskill, interchanging seniors Schae Auffant, Erin Hedges, Katie Miller and Katelyn Maggio at the guard spots, and new Chatham coach Chris Mazzeo, who was at Shaker last season, wants to create mismatches with a pair of 5-10 players, senior Brooke Kellner and freshman Allison
Taconic Hills also has a deep bench, but coach Carl Campbell has to find someone to carry the offensive load. “Our main weakness will be our shooting,” he said.
