Jack Keenan has found a new home for the holidays.

Keenan, who has hosted a Christmas-themed radio program on radio station WGY (810-AM) since 1981, will be heard this December on WGDJ (1300-AM).

Keenan said WGY officials recently told him they had decided not to pick up the “Jack Keenan Christmas Special” this year.

“I was surprised, obviously,” Keenan said on Tuesday. “It took me a little while to get used to that. I said, ‘I’ve got to look for another home, the program is now a tradition.’ ”

WGDJ, “Talk 1300,” decided to give airtime to Keenan, a retired banker known as “Mr. Old Time Radio” to Capital Region radio fans. The station plans to expand the Keenan show, which features visits from local clergy, media personalities and politicians and excerpts from old radio shows with yuletide themes, from three hours to five hours.

“I was received with open arms,” Keenan said.

‘Big list’

The 28th edition of the show will keep the old WGY schedule, and be heard on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. “They want to go five, so I’ve got a big list out there,” Keenan said. “I spent the whole weekend sending out invitations.”

Patrick Ryan, vice president of sales at WGDJ, said his station is glad to host Keenan for Christmas.

“It’s such an annual tradition in the Capital Region, I can’t imagine not hearing it on the radio,” Ryan said. “And Jack’s got a who’s who of people that he interviews . . . it’s a stunning show, I’ve listened to it for years and years.”

Regular “Talk 1300” listeners probably will hear greetings from WGDJ president, general manager and morning host Paul Vandenburgh during the Keenan hours.

“Without question, Paul will be part of the program,” Ryan said.

WGY officials could not be reached for comment.
