BURNT HILLS & BALLSTON LAKE The president of the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Board of Education is resigning her post to move with her husband to the southern tier where he is taking a new job.
Nancy Della Pia said she intends to resign from her seat effective Oct. 29.
She said her husband has accepted a job in Owego, west of Binghamton.
“I am very saddened to come to this decision, “ Della Pia said. “I had looked forward to working with our administration and board on the very important issues and plans the district has for an entire term as president.”
Della Pia was elected to the BH-BL board in 2005 and began her second three-year term of office in July.
The school board is now accepting letters of interest from district residents who would like to serve on the board.
District spokeswoman Christy Multer said letters that includes candidates’ interests and volunteer activities should be postmarked by Oct. 31 and sent to District Superintendent James Schultz, 50 Cypress Drive, Glenville, NY 12302.
“State law requires that school board candidates be age 18 or older, a registered voter of the district, able to read and write, a resident of the school district for at least one year, not a district employee and not residing with a family member who serves on the same board,” Multer said.
A date to interview candidates has not been set, but Schultz said he expects it will be soon.
“We start the process of setting the next school year’s budget goals and dates in November, “ he said. “I know the board will prefer to have the new person approved by then, if possible.”
School board members are unpaid. The seven members of the BH-BL board attend meetings on two or more Tuesday evenings per month year round.
Schultz thanked Della Pia for her service to the district, particularly in the areas of budget preparation and lobbying state legislative leaders in Albany on behalf of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.
“Nancy’s stepping down will be a real loss to our community,” he said.
