ALBANY A state investigation has determined that a Department of Motor Vehicles employee improperly accessed the agency's database to get personal information on women he had a romantic interest in or had dated.
Guy Rivers, 35, of Albany, was charged in June with five felony counts of computer trespass and five misdemeanor counts of official misconduct. He resigned from his job after his arrest, and the charges are still pending.
The state Inspector General's Office, which investigated the charges, released its report Thursday. The investigation found that Rivers improperly accessed the secure computerized DMV records of at least 12 individuals, including seven DMV employees, several times in 2007 and 2008. On 35 occasions, he accessed the records of a former girlfriend and four other women he met socially, the report said.
In an interview with the Inspector General's Office, Rivers admitted he checked the records of women he was interested in dating to determine their ages, birthdates and driving records, according to the report. He said he also accessed rthe ecords of two female state employees because he was carpooling with them and needed to submit their driver's license information to the state Office of General Services to get a shared parking permit. A review of OGS records contradicted this claim, however, according to the findings.
Rivers also admitted he accessed the records of a male DMV employee because he suspected the employee was dating one of Rivers' female friends in the office, the report said.
