Who won debate? Why, my candidate did, local backers say

— Local supporters of both presidential candidates thought their man was winning the debate Friday night.

“I see experience versus inexperience,” said Mary Flanagan, a John McCain supporter who gathered with 20 others at the city Republican Committee headquarters at 92 Congress St.

Mike Russo, a Democrat who is running for state Senate, thought Barack Obama was looking good.

“I think side by side with the two candidates, it’s very difficult for John McCain to compete with Barack Obama, because he’s so dynamic,” Russo said while watching the debate at the Masie Center on Washington Street.

Supporters of the two candidates gathered just a block away from each other.

At the GOP headquarters, people laughed at McCain’s jokes and shook their heads at Obama’s policy suggestions.

“I think it’s a good give-and-take on both sides,” said John Herrick, the city GOP chairman. “He’s a very spirited debater. He’s true to his convictions and he’s got some fight to him.”

McCain’s “fight” can also be his downfall, one Obama supporter said.

“McCain looks angry. I’m waiting for him to melt down,” said Sharon McFarlane of Wilton.

About 130 Obama fans at the Masie Center roared with pleasure at their candidate’s rebuttals to his opponent on certain points.

Elliott Masie, who heads up local Obama efforts, said he thinks people will see the wisdom in Obama’s policies.

“John McCain wants to give tax breaks to people like me,” said the chief executive officer of the local think tank.

Keith Kaplan, of Saratoga Springs, a McCain supporter, said he thinks McCain has a chance to take New York, thanks to his more moderate stance: “I think he’s got the kind of appeal that has made it so close.”

Also, the state’s aging voters might be more likely to go with the veteran, he said: “I think that works against Obama to some degree.”

Attendance at the McCain party was lighter, about 20 people, perhaps because of the uncertainty until midday Friday over whether their candidate would even show up.

Going to the debate rather than waiting for a deal on the federal bailout was the right move, Herrick said.

“If he didn’t debate and was able to stay in Washington and they got an agreement, it would have shown good leadership on his part,” Herrick said. But “clearly, they weren’t going to reach an agreement today.”

The Obama people had planned to have a bash all along, following their candidate who promised to be in Mississippi even if McCain didn’t show.

Masie said McCain’s impulsiveness about the debate and the bailout talks will turn off some voters. “He does what we often call, ‘Ready, shoot, aim.’ ”
