Fort Edward police chief wounded in accidental shooting
FORT EDWARD Town Police Chief Walter Sanford accidentally shot himself in the left hand while cleaning a personal pistol Friday evening.
Sanford, who is also a Whitehall village trustee, was at his home when the weapon discharged, according to Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy. Sanford then took a personal vehicle to Glens Falls Hospital, where he was treated for the wound and released.
Investigators from the sheriff's department interviewed Sanford at the hospital and also took photos of the room in his house where the shooting occurred. Murphy said the photos and statements made by Sanford were consistent with his claims that the discharge was accidental and no further action is necessary.
