School softball: State honors for Russell, DeGregory, McGuirk
Alysa Russell of Mechanicville and Dani DeGregory of Greenwich have been named Class C state Co-Players of the Year, and Greenwich’s Greg McGuirk was selected Class C Coach of the Year by the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls’ Sports.
Russell came back after missing her junior season with a knee injury to hit .548 with five home runs and 50 RBI as the Lady Red Raiders put together a 16-0 Colonial Council record and a 20-3 record.
The three-sport standout, who plans to attend Utica College, was earlier named the Section II Player of the Year.
DeGregory, also a three-sport standout, capped a four-year softball career by hitting .486 with six triples, five home runs and 34 RBI as the Witches won the first state championship in program history.
DeGregory, who will attend Skidmore College, went 6-for-8 with two home runs and nine RBI as Greenwich beat Pierson/Bridgehampton, 12-1, in the state semis and defeated Greene, 5-2, in the state title game.
McGuirk led his team to eight straight postseason wins and a 20-8 overall record as the Witches made their second straight trip to the state final four.
Colonie junior pitcher Kelly Lane and Shenendehowa senior second baseman Melissa Morgan were named to the Class AA second team.
Senior pitcher Courtney Dayter of Cohoes was a second-team Class B pick; Mechanicville senior second baseman and junior outfielder/pitcher Alison Ford, Greenwich junior center fielder Sarah Heimbach, and senior pitcher Rachel Quackenbush of Hoosick Falls made the Class C second team; and senior pitcher Alex Rollis of Loudonville Christian School was a Class D second-team pick.
