Annual Latke Fest to include a fry-off in twin categories

— Attention all latke cooks: The second annual Latke Fest, scheduled for Dec. 9 at Temple Beth El will again host a fry-off for the title of “The Golden Latke.”

Cooks will be able to compete in one of two categories: “traditional” or “twisted.” The winner is chosen at the festival by popular vote.

Traditional latkes are made with potato, onion, egg and matzo meal. The fried pancake is served with either apple sauce or sour cream (sometimes both). Last year’s champion, Matt Levin, paired his potato pancake with a wasabi cream sauce, earning “The Golden Latke” by just three votes.

He will get to defend his title against a dozen new competitors. The entry deadline is Friday. If you’re interested, send an email to There is no entry fee.

Tickets for the Latke Fest are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Reserved tables of eight are available for $100. The Hanukkah celebration will include live klezmer music, dancing, children’s activities, contests, and holiday treats. For more information, call Temple Beth El at 792-4364.
