Malta man accused of stealing $50K in jewelry from store
QUEENSBURY A 29-year-old Saratoga County man has been charged with felony counts of grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property for allegedly stealing more than $50,000 worth of jewelry from Kay Jewelers in the Aviation Mall.
The Warren County Sheriff’s Office arrested Eric S. Powell of 79 Snowberry Road in Malta after a lengthy investigation into thefts from the mall store between May 2011 and December 2011 when he was store manager.
The Warren County Sheriff’s Office and loss prevention managers from the Sterling Jewelers Corporation started the investigation in December of 2011.
A variety of merchandise including diamond rings, diamond pendants and Movado watches were missing from the store. During the investigation, police learned Powell was store manager of Kay Jewelers during the period the items were stolen. Police said he allegedly sold the jewelry on eBay.
Powell resigned from his job at Kay Jewelers when the investigation started, the sheriff’s office said in a statement released today.
A Warren County grand jury recently indicted Powell on two counts of grand larceny and two counts of criminal possession of stolen property.
Powell was arraigned in Warren County Court and sent to the Warren County Jail for lack of $10,000.00 cash bail or $30,000.00 bail bond.
