Spartans victory earns football division title

— Dan Porter ran for three touchdowns, and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake wrapped up the Class A Northwest Division football championship with a 32-22 win at Amsterdam Saturday.

Porter’s first two touchdowns helped the Spartans open up a 19-0, second-quarter lead, and his third capped the scoring after the Rugged Rams had clawed within 25-22.

Josh Quesada scored two touchdowns for BH-BL (4-0, 5-1), which won its fifth straight game. Burnt Hills lost at Amsterdam last season in a game that ultimately decided the division title, and beat Amsterdam when the teams met again in the Class A championship game.

Brett Stanavich gained 73 of his 108 rushing yards on a touchdown sprint for Amsterdam (2-1, 3-3), and Geo Rodriguez had a touchdown run and pass to Luis Laboy.

Burnt Hills plays at Class AA Columbia next week, and Amsterdam goes to South Glens Falls to complete its division schedule.

ALBANY — Shawn Gerkman ran 21 times for 128 yards and three touchdowns as the Riders (2-3, 2-4) rolled to a Reinfurt Division win.

Gerkman also caught a scoring pass from Travis Burke, who went 5-for-8 for 110 yards, and Brandon McKey, Steven Rybka and Stephen James had interceptions as part of Ichabod Crane’s shutout. Green Tech (0-5, 0-6) managed 40 yards of offense.

TROY — Anthony Walker scored three of his four touchdowns in the fourth quarter, and Lansingburgh (5-0, 6-0) took over sole possession of first place in the Reinfurt Division with a comeback win over the Indians (4-1, 5-1) Friday night.

Walker rushed for 238 of his 270 yards in the second half.

COXSACKIE — Matt Zeller ran for 135 yards and a touchdown, and Mickey Knight kicked a 28-yard field goal in overtime to give the Blackbirds a South Division victory.

Scott Roney and Mike Young also ran for Voorheesville touchdowns. Daeclan Myrick ran for 131 yards and two touchdowns for the Indians (0-5, 1-5).

Myrick’s four-yard scoring run and Zach Girvin’s two-pointer tied the game at 20 in the fourth quarter.

Evan Hoagland ran 72 yards for the Granville (0-4, 1-5) touchdown, and finished with 140 yards.

WARRENSBURG — Dylan White and Tyler Brockway scored first-quarter touchdowns on runs covering 74 and 64 yards, and Garrett Clark’s interception return in the final frame clinched Fort Edward’s North Division win.

White rushed for 104 yards, and Ryan Collier threw a TD pass to Nate Burkhardt for the Flying Forts (1-2, 3-3). Connor Scott ran for 102 yards and a touchdown to spark Warrensburg (1-2, 2-4).

FONDA — Mike Green returned an interception 35 yards for the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter to cap a big comeback for the Bulldogs.

Cobleskill-Richmondville (2-4) outscored Fonda-Fultonville in the second half, 19-0, with Matt Davenport and Markus Mack scoring on touchdown runs before Green’s key defensive play. The Braves (3-2) came up empty on two drives afterward.

Braves’ quarterback Russ Williams threw touchdown passes to Will Turner and Kevin Twardzik in the opening quarter, and Pat Hart rushed for 161 yards on 29 carries.

Kalen Minott also scored for the Spartans (3-3).

SAQUOIT VALLEY — Tyler Rivera ran for 127 yards and two touchdown and caught a scoring pass as Chatham (6-0) beat Lyons (2-4) of Section V.

John Mackerer made two big plays for Chatham, a 50-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter, and 45-yard interception return for a score that gave the Panthers a 43-20 third-quarter lead.
