SCHENECTADY — WAMC radio personality, jazz drummer and Gazette copy editor Tim Coakley has been named one of 25 “2013 Jazz Heroes” by the Jazz Journalists Association.

Coakley has been on the air for more than 25 years on WAMC. He has written about jazz frequently since joining the Gazette in 1978. He is also president of A Place for Jazz, a concert series that is held each fall.

A native of Utica and resident of Schenectady, Coakley has played the drums with a number of area jazz luminaries, including Skip Parsons.

The Jazz Journalists Association promotes the best use of media of all kinds — new and old, online and off — to tell the story of jazz. The Hero designations, given annually since 1997, are awards for excellence in journalism and musicianship.
