Man indicted for manslaughter in Charlton crash

BALLSTON SPA A Washington County man was indicted on second-degree manslaughter and other charges Monday in connection with a fatal head-on crash Jan. 20 in Charlton.
Marcus R. Young, 25, of Big Birch Hill Road, Granville, will be arraigned this afternoon in Saratoga County Court, according to the Saratoga County District Attorney’s Office.
Young was charged by a Saratoga County grand jury in connection with a head-on crash on Route 67 that killed Glenn L. Smith, 50, of West Charlton.
Immediately after the crash, state police charged Young with second-degree vehicular manslaughter, a Class D felony, and driving while ability impaired by drugs.
The grand jury that heard the case added a more serious charge of second-degree manslaughter, a Class C felony, as well as indicting Young on second-degree vehicular manslaughter. The penalty for second-degree manslaughter can be up to 15 years in prison.
The indictment also charged Young with misdemeanor counts of driving while ability impaired by drugs, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, driving with ability impaired by the combination of drugs and alcohol and unlawful possession of marijuana and fireworks.
State police said Young was driving westbound on Route 67 near Jockey Street and crossed into the eastbound lane, where he collided with Smith’s vehicle.
Young has been in jail in lieu of $15,000 cash bail or $30,000 bail bond.
* Clyde J. Driggers, 33, of Saratoga Avenue, Mechanicville, was indicted on a felony charge of driving while intoxicated. He was arrested Dec. 23 in Stillwater.
* Jeffrey L. Woodbeck, 34, of Coy Road, Greenfield, was sentenced by County Court Judge Jerry J. Scarano to one to three years in prison for third-degree burglary. He was arrested last July 28 in Saratoga Springs, and pleaded guilty in January.
* Michael Edwards, 22, of Duane Avenue, Schenectady, pleaded guilty to third-degree attempted criminal sale of a controlled substance. He was arrested Nov. 29 and will be sentenced June 7.
