Wrestling: BH-BL falls short in bid for ‘B’ title

— All afternoon and evening, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake played catch up.

In the end, not even a 5-for-5 effort in the finals would be enough for the Spartans to overtake Queensbury in the team race at Saturday’s Class B wrestling tournament at Mohonasen.

“We had a great finals, but just came up short,” said Burnt Hills coach Steve Jones after his team lost by three points, 247.5-244.5. “Congratulations to [Queensbury coach] Rory Johnson and his kids. They wrestled well all day.”

“It’s disappointing, because we came close,” said 182-pounder Antnony Papa, one of the Burnt Hills champions. “We wanted to win it, but we still have a lot of guys going to Glens Falls next week.”

Burnt Hills had 14 of its 15 wrestlers finish in the top six, qualifying them for this weekend’s Division I Championship at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Queensbury, which led Burnt Hills by 341⁄2 points prior to the semis and 188-1471⁄2 after that round, saw its eight finalists go 4-4.

“We had almost everyone qualify for next weekend, and that was one of the goals,” said Jones. “I’m happy for them.”

Still, it didn’t take away some of the sting for a team that swept through its Suburban Council dual meet season and handily beat Queensbury in the Linda Stuart Duals two months ago.

“That’s the toughest part. We hammered Queensbury in a dual meet,” said 138-pounder Joey Butler, who won his second straight title with second-period pin of Spencer Kilburn of South Glens Falls. “But we lost a couple of matches to Queensbury kids today.”

Sophomore Jake Achcraft (152) also won his second straight title. Jack Hatton (170) and Nico Fragale (220) also won their weight classes. All five BH champions are underclassmen.

“I think I had the element of surprise working for a me this year,” said Ashcraft. “Last year, I wrestled a kid from Averill Park that I had wrestled before. I hadn’t wrestled Kilburn.”

Butler pinned all three opponents, one week after putting six-time Class A champ Nick Kelley of Shenendehowa on his back in the finals of the Big 10 tournament.

“That was big for my confidence,” said Butler, who expects to meet the Shenendehowa senior this weekend. “This tournament, you don’t want to make any mistakes and get through.”

Papa cracked a big smile as he stood atop the podium, partly from joy and partly as a reaction to some razzing from friends.

“This is cool,” said the 11th-grader. “It’s a nice feeling to win, after finishing second last year.”

Amsterdam 11th-grader Brandon Lapi was more subdued after winning his fourth straight title. The two-time state-place finisher won all three of his matches with first-period pins.

“The first one was the most exciting,” said Lapi, who picked up his 209th career win in the final. “Now, I just go out and do what I do.”

Teammate Ken Garcia won at 195 for the third-place Rams. James Marquez dropped a tough 4-3 decision to five-time winner Brandon Goldup of LaSalle in the 160 final.

“I made one mistake,” said the Amsterdam senior, who is looking for a rematch this weekend. “I know what I have to work on.”

Mohonasen had just one finalist in senior Steve Shadick at 145, but had 11 get through to next weekend.

Scotia-Glenville’s two big men got to the final, with sophomore 285 Bradon Hulin pinning, and Joe Graham losing to Fragale at 220.

“They have a good competition,” said Tartans coach Ryan Patrie. “They push each other to get better in practice all the time.”

CLASS A

NISKAYUNA — Senior Nick Kelley made it a perfect 6-for-6 at this stage, needing just 2:06 to record three pins and win the 138-pound title and help Shenendehowa to its eighth straight team title.

Classmates Corey Ali (113) and David Almaviva (145) also repeated, as did 11th-grader Levi Ashley (195). Ali Hashimee (182) gave the Plainsmen fve individual winners out of nine finalists.

Kevin Parker (120), Jordan Maynard (126), Zach Joseph (152) and Tyler Gougler (170) also got to the finals.

Shaker’s Blake Retell, who missed the 2012 postseason with an injury, beat Parker, reversing a dual meet result and winning his third “A” title.

Joseph was second for the second straight year, losing to Columbia’s Angell Kress, who made it two in a row.

Columbia had the most individual champs — six. State 285 runner-up El Shaddai VanHoesen, repeat winner Kyle Greene (132), John McHugh (126), Chris Morrissey (160) and Will Martin (170) were the other Blue Devils’ winners.

Schalmont’s Nick Gallo (160) and Anthony Paturso (152) became three-time winners. Two of Paturso’s titles came in Class B while attending Mohonasen. The Sabres finished fourth.

Colonial Council champion Cobleskil-Richmondvlle finished 191⁄2 points behind Hudson Falls, as Mike Green (170) repeated, and Brandon Merchant (113) and Matt Davenport (132) also won.

Tyler Merecki won his fourth title to help Salem to second place, denying Whitehall’s Al Aubin his fourth, in the 120 title match.

Whitehall’s Jon Diekel became a five-time winner, beating Albany Academy’s Sean Romakski in the 138 final, and Joe Sprung (220) of Berne-Knox-Westerlo remained unbeaten by winning his second straight Class D title.
