— The Sage Colleges is establishing a new center in honor of Dawn Hochsprung, the principal of Sandy Hook Elementary School and a doctoral candidate in Sage’s Educational Leadership program, who died in the Newtown, Conn., massacre.

The Esteves School of Education is creating the Dawn Hochsprung Center for the Promotion of Mental Health and School Safety.

The college had already created a memorial fund in honor of Hochsprung, who was one of the 20 children and six adults killed by a gunman.

“As educators, we see the need for more resources in schools to address mental health issues and provide a safe environment for children that is most conducive to learning,” Lori V. Quigley, dean of the Esteves School of Education, said in a news release.

Also, Sage President Susan C. Scrimshaw announced Hochsprung will receive her doctorate posthumously with her class in May 2015.

“The idea for a center was born out of a desire to honor Dawn and to do what we can to prevent something like this from happening again,” she said.
