When their is trauma involved particularly with gun shot wounds or stabbing from knives, protocol indicates that Albany Medical Hospital should be utilized because they are the closest Level 1 trauma center and statistics indicate that these victims have the best chance of survival if Albany Med. is utilized. As far as the helicopter is concerned, I'm guessing that due to the poor driving conditions the helicopter was the patients best option for transport.
