Woman charged in stabbing of cab driver
SCHENECTADY An arrest has been made in the stabbing of a taxi driver who sought help at the main branch of the Schenectady County Public Library on Thursday evening.
Desere D. Shaw, 18, no address available, is charged with attempted murder, three counts of first-degree assault and fourth degree grand larceny, all felonies. She was arrested by the Schenectady Police Department's Detective Division, with assistance from the Gloversville Police Department.
The charges stem from a stabbing in the area of Eastern Avenue and Nott Terrace just before 7 p.m. Thursday.
Police said the driver, Derek Leach, 28, who drives for Glove City Transportation in Gloversville, picked up Shaw at the Johnstown Price Chopper. He dropped her off on Nott Terrace near the Schaffer Heights Apartments, according to earlier police accounts.
Because of a blood trail starting from the apartments and ending at the library, where Leach asked for help, it is believed by police that's where the stabbing occurred.
When Leach arrived at the library, staff called 911, and he was eventually taken to Albany Medical Center by a MedFlight helicopter. His wounds were serious, but not life threatening.
His taxi was found shortly after the stabbing, with its engine still running and headlights on, at the corner of Windsor Terrace and Prospect Street.
Shaw is scheduled to be arraigned this morning.
