— The University at Albany men’s basketball team was concerned that a snowstorm that belted the Northeast this weekend was going to delay Saturday’s basketball game with Maine until today.

As it turned out, maybe the Great Danes would have been better off with another day of rest.

Despite Sam Rowley’s fourth career double-double — 19 points and 17 rebounds — the Great Danes lost to the Black Bears, 64-52, at Alfond Sports Arena.

Rowley, a sophomore forward from Australia, added five steals and four assists for the Great Danes, who also got 16 points from senior guard Mike Black, who became the 12th player in UAlbany history to score at least 1,400 career points. Black played the game despite an ankle sprain that kept him out of the second half of last Wednesday night’s game at UMBC.

UAlbany, which had its two-game winning streak snapped, dropped to 7-5 in conference play and 18-8 overall.

The Great Danes got their first and only lead, 5-4, with 18:04 in the first half. After Rowley hit his layup, Black came back with a three-pointer that gave him his 1,400th career point.

However, the Black Bears responded with a 22-6 run to grab a 15-point lead, 26-11, with 6:55 left in the first half. Maine hit five of its first six three-pointers during the stretch.

Down 13 at the half, UAlbany charged back to begin the second half, going on a 14-7 run and cut the deficit to six, 40-34, with 11:57 remaining. Rowley scored five points during the stretch.

Maine (9-15, 4-8 America East) bounced back with a 10-4 run to extend the lead to 12, 50-38, with 7:28 left in the contest. Justin Edwards paced the Black Bears with four points, including a breakaway dunk.

The Black Bears did not relinquish the lead for the final seven minutes of the contest, holding the Great Danes to 14 points the rest of the way.

UAlbany shot just 36 percent (20-for-56) from the floor and 29 percent (4-for-14) from behind the arc. The Great Danes outrebounded the Black Bears, 42-32.

UAlbany is idle until hosting Hartford Saturday night at SEFCU Arena.
