The Hyde Collection has hired Charles A. Guerin, a former head of two major university art museums, as its new executive director.

Guerin, a Chicago native, most recently served as the executive director of the University of Arizona Museum of Art and as a professor of art. He is also a former commissioner of Wyoming state parks and cultural resources, and executive director of the University of Wyoming Art Museum in Laramie. He will join The Hyde in March.

The museum’s board of trustees retained a museum executive recruiting firm in Manchester, N.H., to find candidates for the job. After nearly 11 months of searching nationally, the board unanimously approved Guerin’s appointment.

Candace Wait, chairwoman of the board, says Guerin is an experienced and energetic museum director: “He built the internationally acclaimed art museum at the University of Wyoming and created and endowed The Archive of Visual Art while director of the University of Arizona Museum of Art. He has an excellent track record in fundraising, building expansions, renovations, endowments and operations, and his experience will help lead The Hyde toward greater prominence on the regional and national stage.”

Among Guerin’s goals is increasing the visibility of the museum as a regional and national treasure, and building upon The Hyde’s educational programs for children and adults. He wants to make the museum accessible to many more people.

“The Hyde holds an extraordinary collection of Old Master and American paintings — one of the best in America for a museum of its size — and the museum is a beloved treasure and a major economic asset to Glens Falls, the Capital Region and upstate New York,” he said.

Guerin will replace co-interim directors Erin Coe, chief curator, and Lynne Mason, financial officer. Coe and Mason stepped in after former Executive Director David F. Setford announced he would be leaving The Hyde in August for a job in Florida.
