UPDATE: 2 injured as armored car flips over on Northway
Updated 11:14 a.m.
CLIFTON PARK Two people suffered minor injuries after the armored car they were in tipped over on the Northway.
The accident occurred at about 8:15 a.m. in the northbound lane just north of Exit 10. A vehicle that was not involved in the accident made a sudden lane change, causing another driver to take evasive action to avoid a collision, according to New York State Police spokesman Trooper Mark Cepiel.
“She over-corrected to the shoulder of the roadway and corrected again back onto the roadway and struck the front of the armored vehicle, which caused it to spin almost a revolution,” he said. “Eventually, the tires caught on the pavement, causing it to tip over sideways and the vehicle slid a short distance.”
The driver and passenger from the Loomis armored car had cuts to their heads and hands, according to Cepiel.
The vehicle was carrying cash but none left the vehicle during the crash and the scene was secured by the troopers and guards.
The two left lanes of that portion of the Northway were closed for much of the morning. They were expected to reopen by 11:30 a.m.
The crash is still under investigation and no tickets have been issued. Police do not have an extensive description of the first vehicle that made the lane change other than its color, Cepiel said.
