— MVP Health Care has elected Schenectady County legislator Karen B. Johnson as the newest chair of its board of directors.

She took over Jan. 1, after serving on the board for the last 15 years, with the previous four years spent as vice chair.

Johnson recently led the search committee in naming Denise Gonick president and CEO of the Schenectady-based health insurer, the first-ever CEO transition at MVP.

In her new role, Johnson will help guide the company through a changing health care landscape and its inclusion in the new state Health Exchange.

“This is an exciting and interesting time to be working in health care,” said Johnson in a news release issued today. “MVP’s focus on helping to make our members and the communities we serve healthier demonstrates our overall commitment to wellness.”

Johnson was elected to the Schenectady City Council in 1975, and served as president from 1980 to 1983. She served as Schenectady’s mayor from 1984 to 1992, and has been a member of the Schenectady County Legislature since 2000, leading a $30 million expansion campaign at Proctors in Schenectady.

Johnson has also served on several local boards, including Highlights for Children, Living Resources, Sunnyview Hospital, United Way and the Refreshing Spring Day Care Center.

The new vice chair of MVP’s board is Menands resident Alan Goldberg, the former president and CEO of First Albany Corporation. Most recently, he has served as the Palace Theater’s board chairman, and prior to that has led the boards of the Albany Institute of History and Art, the Albany Symphony Orchestra, the Center for Economic Growth and the Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to Johnson and Goldberg, the MVP Health Care Board of Directors for 2013 is composed of:

• Wallace Altes, of Troy

• Michael Copeland, of Rochester

• Burt Danovitz, of Utica

• Richard D’Ascoli, of Schenectady

• Joseph DePaolis, of Rochester

• Richard Gullott, of Scotia

• Herschel Lessin, of Poughkeepsie

• Ernest Levy, of Cooperstown

• William Reddy, of Rochester

• Jon Rich, of Alplaus

• Arthur Roth, of Loudonville

• Michael Schneider, of Rochester

• Debbie Sydow, of Abingdon, Va.
