The spring training season is only five games old for the Seattle Mariners, and Schenectady's Casper Wells has one hit — a home run — in eight at-bats.

The Mariners, based in Peoria, Ariz., for the Cactus League season, are off to a 4-1 start in the spring games.

They started the exhibition season with a 9-3 loss to the San Diego Padres, with Wells clubbing a two-run homer.

Seattle then reeled off four straight wins, beating the Padres, 8-6 and 8-3, the Angels, 9-8, and the Brewers, 6-5.

The Mariners play the Cleveland Indians at 3 p.m. today.

Wells, a former Schenectady High School and Towson State standout, is competing with several other outfielders for a spot on the Mariners' opening day roster.

In 2012, he hit .228 (65 for 285) in 93 games, with 12 doubles, three triples, 10 homers and 36 runs batted in.

Wells was traded from the Detroit Tigers to the Mariners in 2011.
