Snow in January puts smiles on some faces.

And skis, skates and snowboards on some feet. And sleds under some bottoms.

In 1993, early winter snowfalls gave folks options to celebrate the season. Skiers and snowboarders were seen on some hills; skaters made quick slides and slashes over new ice. People crowded onto small sleds — and large sleighs — and surveyed winter wonderlands.

Some — like Kim Latza and Windy Olden — preferred adventures away from the snow. The runners didn’t mind frosty breaths, however, and smiled as they ran in the Hagaman “Winter Wimp” road race.
