Ravena's Eric Williams is wrapped up by Schalmont's Matt Osborne in the 113 pound bout at Schalmont High School Wednesday.

— Nick Gallo and Anthony Paturso have provided the Schalmont wrestling team with a devastating 1-2 punch since the latter transferred from Mohonasen.

Though the prematch random draw found them at opposite ends of the lineup Wednesday, the duo gave the Sabres two of their five falls in a 42-28 Colonial Council win over Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk. The win kept 6-0 Schalmont in the hunt for the league title, with matches remaining against fellow unbeaten Cobleskill and once-beaten Watervliet.

“Right where we want to be,” said Paturso, 24-2, who ended the dual with his 18th pin, as he competed at 152 pounds “The matches at the end of the league season are tough, and they’re going to get us ready for sectionals.”

Paturso, a two-time Class B champ while at Mohonasen, has given Gallo an added push as the defending sectional champ works toward his third trip to the state tournament.

“We push each other every day in the room,” said Gallo, who raised his season record to 26-0 with his 17th pin as he won the opening bout at 160 pounds. “It’s great to have a workout partner like that. We made a pact at the beginning of the year, sectionals and states. That’s our goals.”

Brian Faulisi, in his first season as Schalmont’s head coach after 10 years at Schenectady, has a more immediate goal for his Sabres, 17-1 overall.

“This keeps us in line for the league championship,” Faulisi said after exchanging pleasantries with one of his Schenectady standouts, Cobleskill-Richmondville coach Justin Kimball. “In matches like these, you always need people to come through besides the ones you expect.

“I know what we’re going to get from Nick and Anthony and the Lamberts [sectional place finishers Alex and Paul, who both pinned]. Matt Osborne got a big win for us, and so did Matt Cappuccitti. Those are things that make a difference.”

Ravena coach Henry Mormile opted to bump some of wrestlers up one weight class in order to gain an edge. After Gallo pinned, Luke Misuraca matched that performance to begin a string of five straight wins for the visitors. The last of those saw state DII finalist Alex Soutiere ride out Ben Newcomb for the final 2:00 for a 5-2 win and 19-6 Ravena edge.

Alex Lambert’s 10th pin of the year ended that run, and Osborne beat Eric Williams at 113 before Paul Lambert (24-2) got his 16th pin, Cappuccitti scored an OT win at 126 and Jon Batchler pinned at 132.

“I moved some guys up to try to give us an advantage,” said Mormile, whose Indians fell to 4-2 in the league. “We’re one or two guys away. Those one or two guys make a difference, but I’m happy with the way everyone he sent out there wrestled.”

Both teams will send wrestlers to this weekend’s Eastern States Classic, a two-day monster tournament that serves as a measuring stick for those with state tournament ambitions.

“I’m used to the big stage,” said Gallo, one of eight Schalmont athletes entered. “I’ve been to states twice, to the Eastern States twice. I just want to get a good seed and do well. There are two state champions in my weight class.”

Paturso is looking forward to his trip to the Eastern States, hoping it gives him a feel for the postseason.

“It’s a chance to see where I stand in regards to the rest of the state,” he said.

Mormile is bringing six wrestlers to the event, led by Soutiere and 23-5 Pechette (138).

“They get to see where they stand,” said Mormile. “It’s a tough two days,”

SPARTANS UNBEATEN

North Division champion Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake beat Averill Park, 52-24, as the Suburban Council began its crossover rounds. The win, combined with Shenendehowa’s 51-19 win over South Division champ Columbia, left the Spartans as the lone unbeaten team in the SC.

Matt Holton’s pin of Jason Johnson with 25 seconds left in their 220-pound match helped Saratoga Springs to a 39-33 win over Colonie; Dom Notar, Tom Layton

and Anthony Hall pinned to get Mohonasen past Niskayuna; Troy Mackey’s pin at 152 sealed Ballston Spa’s 42-36 win over Guilderland; and Shaker used six forfeits and four pins to beat Bethlehem, 60-24, in the other SC matches.

Duanesburg got first-period pins from Connor Lawrence and Colin Kenyon to beat Canajoharie/Fort Plain, 62-19, in the Western Athletic Conference, and Queensbury beat Hudson Falls, 42-21, for the Foothills Council title.
