Mekeel, 9-0 in WAC, puts defense to work

The defense clamped down from the opening tip as Mekeel Christian Academy quickly pulled away from Schoharie — the Lions’ closest competitor in the Southern Division of the Western Athletic Conference — in a 63-50 win on Tuesday.

The Lions (9-0 WAC, 12-2 overall) allowed just one point in the opening quarter, a free throw by James Sacket, and took a 14-1 lead into the second.

Caleb Stewart led all scorers with 17 points, and Herb Sexton scored 16 points.

Schoharie (7-2, 11-4) was led by Sacket with 13 points and Tanner Stone with 11.

Berne-Knox-Westerlo got 19 points from both Garrett Pitcher and Tristan Wilson in a 77-52 win over Duanesburg.

The Bulldogs (6-3, 10-5) also got 10 points apiece from Tanner Laurie, Justin Lee and Maclin Norray.

The Eagles (2-7, 3-12) were led by 20 points from Keven Lenehan. Dylan Madison added 13.

Canajoharie beat St. Johnsville, 57-50, in overtime. Kevin Shannon and Dillan Veeder both scored 13 points for the Cougars (11-1 14-2), Veeder going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in overtime.

The Saints (5-6, 7-9) got 17 points from Alex Hart, 13 from Kyle Smith and 12 from Ricky Jasewicz.

Mayfield’s Dylan Toscano scored 14 points in a 47-31 win over Northville. The Panthers got 16 rebounds from Lucas VanNostrand, while both Ryan Hennessy and Jordan VanNostrand grabbed 10 rebounds.

Northville was led by Jim Grega and Tim Monette with seven points apiece.

Middleburgh beat Sharon Springs, 57-35, with nine points from Ryan Bechtold. Sharon Springs got eight apiece from Vernon Kennedy and Greg Oullette.

Drew Zlogar scored 14 points to lead Shenendehowa past Niskay­una, 56-33, in the Suburban Council. Ted McCarthy added 10 points for the Plainsmen (9-2, 9-3).

Brandon Fine scored 10 points for the Silver Warriors (1-9, 1-11).

Jake Samuels scored 15 points in a 51-44 win for Colonie over Mohonasen. Ryan Nicholson added 12 points for the Garnet Raiders (6-6, 7-7).

Mohonasen (2-9, 3-10) was led by Grant Massaroni’s 17 points.

Malik Dare and Andrew Holmes both scored 16 points for Shaker (10-2, 12-2) in a 66-51 win over Ballston Spa. George Kernochan and Andre Edgerton both had 11 points for the Scotties (4-8, 5-8).

Guilderland held off a late charge by Columbia to win, 66-60. The Dutchmen (8-3, 9-4) were led by Marc Dumoulin with 17 points, while Brian Crupi scored 13 points, and both Vince Simeone and And­rew Platek finished with 11.

The Blue Devils (7-5, 8-6) got 19 points from Conrad Zampier and 18 from Jahlil Nails.

Bethlehem beat Averill Park, 69-46, with 20 points from Connor Morelli and 17 from John Sica. Joe Giacone added 10 points for the Eagles (10-2, 12-2). Averill Park (3-9, 6-9) got 12 points from Matt LaBounty, who was 10-for-12 at the free-throw line.

Catholic Central’s Anthony Mack, returning from a concussion suffered Jan. 18 against Schenec­tady, scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Crusaders beat Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons, 63-31, in the Big 10.

Jiriem Tedders also had 13 points for Catholic Central (6-7, 7-8), and Brian Brooks added 12.

Bishop Gibbons (1-12, 1-14) got 14 points from Dwayne Freeman.

Dyaire Holt led Troy with 16 points in a 76-53 win over Schenec­tady. Liam Testo and Zach Radz both added 12 points for the Horsemen (12-1, 13-2), and Javion Ogun­yemi scored 10 points.

The Patriots (7-5, 7-7) got 17 points from Darius Macon, while Clarence Stanford chipped in with 10.

LaSalle’s Ralph Erickson scored 34 points, hitting four three-pointers and going 12-for-14 from the free-throw line, in a 68-53 win over Bishop Maginn.

LaSalle (8-4, 8-6) also got 22 points from Elijah Burns. Demere Hannah scored 15 points for Bishop Maginn (5-7, 6-8), and JaQuan Jones added 10.

Christian Brothers Academy beat Albany, 58-45, with 13 points apiece from Tyrell Ramsey and Greig Stire. Nick Marini added 12 points for the Brothers (12-1, 13-2), and Drew Brundige had 10.

Albany (2-10, 3-11) got 10 points from Keneeff Danzy.

Scotia-Glenville’s Alex Sausville scored 15 points in a 63-42 Foothills Council win over Broadalbin-Perth. The Tartans (10-0, 13-0) got 13 points from Andrew Tabbert and 11 from Joe Cremo.

The Patriots (3-7, 5-9) were led by Chris Natoli with 14 points.

Gloversville’s Hunter Goodwin scored 12 points in a 54-44 win over Johnstown, and both Barceem Dukes and Kevin Johnston added 11 points.

Johnstown was led by Jamal Vazquez with 13 points and Jon­athan Heroth with 10.

In the Colonial Council, Fonda-Fultonville’s Will Turner scored 17 points in a 51-43 win over Schalmont. Ryan Derby added 13 points for the Braves (3-7, 5-8).

The Sabres (4-6, 6-9) got 18 points from Dom Caputo and 12 from Devin Murphy.

Cohoes beat Ichabod Crane, 61-52, with 19 points from Sheldon Austin, 14 from Elijah Newsome and 19 from Brandon LaForest.

The Riders (7-7) got 16 points from Stephen James, 13 from Brian Pulsifer and 10 from Shaun Davis.

Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk (8-3, 10-4) got 14 points from David Warnken and 13 from Christian Hodson in a 55-48 win over Mechanicville. Conner Zeoli added 10 points in the win.

The Red Raiders (3-7, 7-7) were led by Nate Hatalsky’s 14 points. Nico Dumas finished with 10.

James Hilton scored 19 points, and Mat Yamin added 18 in Loudonville Christian School’s 60-40 Central Hudson Valley League win over Heatly. Gabe Brown had 15 points for the 14-1 Eagles.

Heatly got 12 points from Jahseim Chapman, 11 from Jesse Sullivan and 10 from Austin Horton.

Waterford-Halmoon beat Berlin, 53-48, with 15 points from Christian Jones and 14 from Josh Orton. Nick Brisson added 11 points for the Fordians (7-7).

Berlin was led by Greg Depaolis with 21 points, while Cullen O’Brien scored 10.

Doane Stuart’s Evan Schettini scored 16 points and Rory Siy added 13 in a 67-38 win over New Leb­anon. Schettini added 10 rebounds, and Siy grabbed 21 boards. Deshawn Speights had nine points, 11 assists and nine rebounds, just missing a triple-double.

North Warren (11-2) edged Corinth, 61-59, in the Adirondack League, getting 21 points from Nick Sapienza and 13 points from both Ethan Schenke and Anthony Sapienza.

The Tomahawks (6-7, 6-8) were led by Zack Shippee with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Robert Shippee added 16 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks. Blake Basmajian chipped in with 11 points.
