Siena announces non-league schedule
Siena's non-conference schedule includes a return to the Old Spice Classic, and with it comes games against national powers Purdue and Memphis.
New head coach Jimmy Patsos called it one of the toughest non-conference schedules in school history, starting with the rivalry game against UAlbany on Nov. 8. That's the first of a three-game stretch against teams who made the postseason in 2013, including a Nov. 13 road game against La Salle, which made the Sweet 16.
"It will be very challenging, but that's OK," Patsos said in a team release. "My main concern is the MAAC, and all these games prepare you for the MAAC. Everybody has to be patient, because this will probably end up being one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country. We're a team that's going to get better as the season goes on."
The schedule begins with a Nov. 2 exhibition against New Jersey City University, coached by former Siena great Marc Brown, at the Alumni Recreation Center.
The Saints will look to salvage the final game of a four-game series with Vermont in Burlington on Tuesday, Nov. 12. The Catamounts have won at least 21 games each of the last five seasons and played in the 2013 CBI after losing to UAlbany in the America East title game.
Siena also looks to snap a three-game losing streak against 2012 Atlantic 10 Champion St. Bonaventure when the battle for the Franciscan Cup returns to Albanyon Tuesday, Nov. 19. Siena then travels to Ithaca to start a new series with Cornell on Friday, Nov. 22, before playing at Purdue in a non-bracketed Old Spice Classic game on Sunday, Nov. 24.
Siena will then travel to Disney World to continue in the Old Spice by playing Memphis on ESPN2 Thanksgiving Day at 6:30 p.m. at the HP Field House near Orlando, Fla.
The Tigers are ranked 15th in the ESPN.com early men's preseason top-25 poll and advanced to the third round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament after winning 31 games. A consolation or semifinal game against either LSU or Saint Joseph's will take place Friday, Nov. 29, and the tournament concludes Sunday following an off day when the teams will tour Disney's parks.
The non-league slate concludes at the end of December with Monday home games against Hofstra (Dec. 23) and Fordham (Dec. 30).
