The 72nd season of harness racing got under way Sunday at Saratoga Racing and Casino.

Racing was first held in 1941 at the Spa half-mile oval.

For the month of March, racing will be held on Sunday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday -- and on one Thursday, March 28.

Saratoga offers simulcasting of races from tracks around the country seven days a week.

In Amsterdam, the first-ever Pooch Pageant was held Sunday at the city's Riverfront Center, sponsored by the Montgomery County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. All proceeds from the event will benefit the homeless animals of the MCSPCA Animal Shelter. Canine pageant participants were judged in three categories: Grand Supreme, People/Pup Look-A-Like, and People's Choice.

A total of 36 dogs were entered in the contest.

Laura Sisario, Miss Mohawk Valley International 2012, was involved in planning the event. They had hoped to raise $1,000, and their hopes were realized, as they raised half again more than that.
