— David Griggs-Janower, the founding director of Albany Pro Musica, has suffered a stroke and will not be conducting this weekend. But the concerts in Albany and Schenectady will go on as scheduled with the musicians honoring their ailing leader.

“We ask that our friends and patrons hold David and his family in their thoughts and prayers through this difficult time,” Albany Pro Musica board president Jennifer Amstutz said in a statement, which was also posted on their website.

He suffered a major stroke during surgery Friday, Amstutz said.

Griggs-Janower founded Albany Pro Musica in 1981. He is a professor of music and director of choral activities at the University at Albany.

The choral group, which frequently tours Europe, has performed at two gubernatorial inaugurations and been broadcast on National Public Radio’s “Performance Today.”

This weekend’s concerts are scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Albany and at 3 p.m. Sunday in Key Hall at Proctors in Schenectady. The concert, “If Music Be the Food of Love,” will be led by Albany Pro Musica assistant director Joseph Farrell and Melinda O'Neal, conductor of the Handel Choir in Baltimore. The Capital District Youth Chorale will also perform.

Tickets are $25 and $35 and can be ordered online at www.albanypromusica.org or by calling Tickets by Proctors at 346-6204.

APM is an outstanding part of our region's arts scene, due to the amazing work of David Griggs-Janower. Prayers for him and his family at this difficult time.
