— Wright’s deputy town supervisor, Amber Bleau, expects to lead town meetings following the recent death of Supervisor William Goblet.

Goblet, 75, died Tuesday at Albany Medical Center, his friends said this week. The nature of his illness was unclear Friday, and efforts to contact relatives were unsuccessful.

Goblet was a veteran who served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He ran as a Republican and conservative and first took office in Wright as a town councilman in 2004. He was elected in 2009 to his first term as supervisor and re-elected for a second term in 2011.

As a councilman, Goblet brought attention to town finances and called for an audit that led to the arrest of a former town clerk, Marilyn Y. Wetsel, who was ordered to pay $3,500 in restitution following an investigation.

Schoharie County Sheriff Tony Desmond, a former state trooper, said Goblet joined the state police in 1959 and retired as an investigator in 1979.

Bleau said she considered Goblet a friend and “true gentleman” and said he spent his life serving others.

“He’s done nothing but serve this country,” Bleau said.

Goblet was in the second year of a two-year term and an election for supervisor will take place in November.

Summit town Supervisor Harold Vroman said Goblet’s death represents a “big loss.”

“I relied on his expertise a lot,” Vroman said.

Goblet was one of several town supervisors on the Schoharie County flood recovery committee formed after tropical storms Irene and Lee devastated the valley, said Vroman, who was serving as the board’s chairman at the time.

“He was a great person,” Vroman said.

A memorial service for Goblet is planned for Tuesday at the Gallupville Gospel Church at 118 Gospel Lane, Gallupville.
