A state fire van stands by at the scene at Alpin Haus on Route 5S in Amsterdam after three recreational vehicles were set on fire Thursday.

— Three campers were destroyed Wednesday at Alpin Haus, burned to the chassis in an early morning fire.

According to Aplin Haus President Andy Heck, the fire started in the parking lot of his Route 5S location at approximately 1:30 a.m., engulfing one good size motor home completely by the time Fort Hunter firefighters arrived on the scene.

The fire then spread to another motorhome and a travel trailer. All three were totalled before the blaze could be contained. Four others were damaged but are repairable.

Wednesday afternoon, the blackened RV frames were roped off and state fire investigators bustled around the scene.

Montgomery County Sheriff’s Investigator Robert Gracia could not comment on the cause of the fire, but said it likely started in one of the motorhomes, spreading to the others on its right and left.

Heck declined comment on any possible foul play, but called the whole incident very strange. “You almost never hear about RV fires,” he said. “They’re very well built.”

That said, once the campers did catch fire there was plenty of material to burn. Heck described an RV as basically a small apartment with furniture, walls and appliances.

All the damaged campers were privately owned, in for service. No one was injured in the fire.
