— Town Board member Peter Klotz is suspending his campaign on the Conservative line to be the next Malta town supervisor.

Klotz, who is a Republican and served on the Town Board for six years, failed to wrestle his party’s nomination away from incumbent Supervisor Paul Sausville in a primary election last month but was set to appear on the general election ballot as the Conservative candidate. He is now halting his challenge.

“I’m proud of the positive campaign we ran,” Klotz, 56, said in a statement. “The personal energy expended by me and those close to me during the primary was considerable, and I appreciate the solid support and the extraordinary efforts of many people.

“The primary took a lot out of us, and there have been some significant personal costs. But looking at the current circumstances and an uncertain outcome, we have concluded that we are not prepared to continue,” he added.

He had said Sausville wasn’t dealing well with the financial troubles threatening the Luther Forest Technology Campus or with the Town Board majority’s plan for the downtown area.

If Klotz had actively campaigned as the Conservative candidate, that might have helped the candidacy of Democratic candidate Cynthia Young. This is the second bid for Young, who lost to Sausville in 2011 by fewer than 100 votes after all of the absentee ballots were counted.

It is almost impossible for Klotz to get his name off the ballot in November, but he is encouraging people not to vote for him.

“I will not be voting for myself, and I encourage those who have been supporting me to make another choice,” he said.

When asked who voters should support, he said, “I’ve got no recommendation.”

Klotz will remain on the Town Board, as his seat was not up for election this year.
