House Republicans in danger of destroying party and economy

The Republicans in the House of Representatives are in the process of destroying the Republican brand as a competitive national party. They have foolishly shut down the government and threaten not to raise the debt ceiling, causing a default in the payment of the nation’s obligations. The consequences of actually carrying out that threat has been described as creating an economic apocalypse for the American and world economies.

The House Republicans know that they cannot repeal or delay the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), as they have failed to do so in over 40 attempts. Nonetheless, they remain obsessed with achieving that goal and seem oblivious to the fact that they have reached a new level of political stupidity. They have also reached a reprehensible level of irresponsibility to the American people.

The Founding Fathers (who they worship) would find their behavior repugnant, since causing a default would harm the people.

As poker players know, when you have a weak hand your only option for winning the pot is a successful bluff. The Democrats have decided to call that bluff and are likely to gain politically by doing so.

Bellevue nurses need to be respected, represented

I have resided in Schenectady all of my life and have watched as Ellis Hospital has grown to provide complete and comprehensive medical services to our community. I am fortunate to know many members of the Ellis network and have experienced their dedication to patient care on many occasions.

Most recently, nurses at the Bellevue Woman’s Center have reached out to the New York State Nurses Association for representation similar to that of their colleagues at the Ellis Nott Street and McClellan Campus [Oct. 4 Gazette].

In the past few days I have read about and seen their struggles to be acknowledged as professionals by Ellis management. I am appalled by the lack of interest shown by Ellis CEO/President Jim Connolly to meet with Bellevue nurses at the request of Niskayuna Town Supervisor Joe Landry.

Bellevue nurses are only trying to provide a safe environment and the best care for their patients. The lack of support by Ellis management will inevitably create low morale and force experienced nurses to seek employment elsewhere.

Superior patient care begins with a supporting management team that provides the nursing staff with the best tools and resources to perform their jobs. It is quite apparent that this is lacking in the Bellevue environment. People in this community deserve the best level of medical care.

Mr. Connolly, stop fighting this fine group of caring nurses and allow them to be represented by the New York State Nurses Association.

Voters should get rid of those old familiar faces

If you are not happy with the way the people you’ve elected run our government, and don’t know whether to blame the Democrats or Republicans for this preventable fiasco, don’t blame either. You have only yourself to blame.

Why? Because you keep voting for the same people over and over and over and expect different results. How stupid is that? You vote for them because he’s a nice guy or she’s cute or because one time he or she voted for something you were in favor of, or because he or she says things that you like to hear.

You have to realize that everything a politician says is only to get you to vote for them. Once a politician gets past the local level and moves up to the state or federal level, they no longer represent you. Their primary objective is to try to get re-elected and they will say anything to get your vote. Stop voting for them over and over again.

The fact is that there are only two things both major parties will always agree on and they are: 1) never allow a third major party and 2) never allow term limits. Every other democratic country in the world has many political parties and they form coalitions. Forget your party affiliation and vote some new people to run our government. What have you got to lose? Could it be any worse?

At the local level, the politicians are your friends and neighbors and they do represent you, at least to a point. Vote with your head and not your heart.

In the words of Winston Churchill, “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.”

Common Core could use some remediation itself

Re Sept. 30 article, “In wake of brutal tests, schools react”: If the point of Common Core tests is to show that many more children are educationally deficient than previous tests led the public to believe, how do the newly found lacking children benefit if they do not all receive remedial attention?

You reported that New York’s education department plans to have districts keep the same number of students in academic remediation as the year before, even though new tests show many more children need remediation. How is it fair to children to tell them they need to know a lot more than they do, but refuse to give it to them for another year?

What, then, is the point of tougher tests if they do not lead to better things for kids? Is this merely a demoralization exercise for children, parents and teachers?

Hey Howard, stupidity is not understanding what the ACA is doing to people. Stupidity is voting on a bill that was never read by anyone. Stupidity is is not understanding that we only default if Democrats decide not to pay the debt. Liberals throw around the fear of default because they don't want to decide not to pay for one handout over another. Stupidity is not recognizing that Republicans will fund all of Government except the ACA and the Democrats have shut the Government down to protest. Stupidity is not understanding that the Republicans taking a stand are being responsible to the people that put them in office. Stupidity is not understanding that your handout will end under Democrats when we're broke. Stupidity is voting for the same fiscally irresponsible dim bulbs that cause you to lose your health plan, lose your doctor, lose your job, lose working hours and finally your Constitutional Freedoms. Thats what Political Stupidity is.

Wow! phils2008 you have gotten the definition of stupidity right out of the limbaugh/hannity dictionary! What is the ACA doing to people that you feel is so wrong?

jansjoy, what could I say to a lemming that has blinders on. Your Union comrades don't want it. Congress doesn't want it and 60% of the American public doesn't want it. Why is that janesjoy? Is it because they all know they will lose their current insurance and most likely the doctors they've had for years? Is it because they resent the Gov forcing them to make a purchase? Is it because many have been placed on part time status or had their part time hours reduced? Maybe its because hiring will be cut and fewer will get jobs. Could it be because you're stepping on the rights of the religious and forcing them to make purchases contrary to their fundamental beliefs? Is it because some liberal gov official will decide what your health care will be? What Republicans don't realize is that no matter what they do now, you have destroyed the American health care system for good. Obama and the Libs delayed this destruction until after the elections for a reason, unfortunately you and the other liberal voters are simply clueless.

Right on Neil. Start by dumping Karen Johnson who is unbelievably running again after voting for a 6% Countywide tax increase just last year. Unfortunately she is doing to the County taxpayers what she did to the City taxpayers for 8 years as a failed Mayor.

Phils2008, as you say, the Democrats have shut down the govenment, in protest. Read a column by Thomas Sowell from 10/4/13 concisely stating the facts, if you get a chance. Boy, do I like that gol-danged Constitution of the United States! Also take a gander at a quote from Senator Obama in March 2006 re: the national debt. Illuminating, to say the least.

Jane, really? I'm sick of partisan politics, people in this country really hate others of different parties, this country has not been this divided since the civil war. The only thing that will stop the next civil war in the next 20 years is term limits. If you don't think the liberals know this and that is why the gun grab then you really do have your head in the sand. This year on 9/11 1.2 million Bikers rode into D.C. to counter the million muslim march. You did not hear about it on the news, but I bet you heard about the 60 jap bike riders that beat a guy up. Next year there will be more than 3 million bikers to D.C. I actually have friends from Arkansas and Colorado coming to stay with me so that we can do that ride. You better start paying attention to the real Americans and not Obama, Reid and Pelosi. The winds are changing and the real patriots are P**sed off.
