— State police on Wednesday seized the computer of a prolific and controversial Saratoga-area blogger.

Milton resident John Tighe, author of Saratoga in Decline, was just one of three targets by the state police. Investigators also seized computers and computer-related documents from individuals in the city of Schenectady and in the Rochester area, said Troop G spokesman Mark Cepiel. The seizures were the result of a sealed search warrant from Albany County, which stemmed from an April 2012 complaint by the group NXIVM.

“The nature of the complaint was larceny of computer-related information,” Cepiel said.

Police did not release the names of the three individuals who had their computers seized, but Tighe confirmed he was among them. He said he has hired Lee Kindlon as his attorney and declined additional comment.

In Tighe’s most recent blog entry, posted Wednesday morning, he wrote that his blog will be closed until further notice.

Cepiel said the investigation is ongoing and that the state police’s computer crimes division is now going through the material that was seized. He couldn’t say how long it would take to review the seized material, only that “It will be a lengthy investigation.”

Tighe has been highly critical of NXIVM in the past, using his blog to write about the group’s activities and poke fun at it.

He was the focus of an article The Gazette published on local bloggers last year, and the story noted that his blog has drawn praise and criticism. Critics consider him a pariah spewing a vitriolic and not-always-accurate account of news unfolding in Saratoga Springs and the surrounding communities; others view him as a valuable news source who picks up the slack of the professional media.

“I’ve made a lot of enemies,” Tighe told The Gazette then, “but I’ve also made a lot of friends.”

He was very helpful in the recent Animal Shelter debacle, outing Mindy's role in all aspects of the hiring process. He was the first to expose the hiring process used in Saratoga County. Too bad the story is not interesting enough for the local papers.

Gazette-Teers dig deeper on this one. Understand why you may have to kid glove Schenectady, but Saratoga(county & city)is a slow pitch down the middle, as political sewers go, for investigative journalism.
