— The University at Albany men’s basketball team has struggled to win close conference games on the road all season. Wednesday was no exception.

Quentin Jones scored 16 points, including the game-winning tip shot in the final two seconds, to give University of Maryland Baltimore County a 71-69 America East Conference victory over the Great Danes.

UMBC trailed until midway through the first half before going on a 26-12 run with the help of a pair of Jones three-pointers to lead, 37-27, at the break.

The Great Danes, 1-5 on the road in conference play, stormed back early in the second half, using a 22-9 spurt to grab a three-point advantage (49-46), with 11:44 to play. With the game tied 69-69 and two seconds remaining, Jones tipped in a missed Rodney Elliott layup to give UMBC the win.

Elliott added 16 points with four assists and seven rebounds for the Retrievers (9-16, 5-7 America East Conference).

Leading the defending league champion Great Danes (12-13, 6-6) were sophomore guard Peter Hooley with 21 points and senior swingman Gary Johnson with 20 points and seven rebounds.
