SCHENECTADY
Italian cuisine scores very high at Johnny’s restaurant
Sunday, May 12, 2013
We denizens of the Capital Region just can’t get enough Italian food. Johnny’s is new and it’s hopping, as diners embrace another Mallozzi restaurant.
Iron Roost makes waffles work in wondrous ways
Sunday, April 28, 2013
There’s a world of waffle wonders out there, and a good place to start is the Iron Roost in Ballston Spa.
Chocolate Mill is filled with variety of delectable choices
Sunday, April 21, 2013
The shop is long and handsome, with wood paneling and copper-tinged painted walls, a black painted tin ceiling, and high and low granite-topped tables, but what draws your attention are the light-filled refrigerated display cases and then, their magnificent contents. Here reside picture-perfect delicate pastries, each one a work of art.
Home Front Cafe serves comfort food, evokes era of WWII
Sunday, April 14, 2013
The Home Front Cafe is history lesson as well as restaurant. Take your time over the much-loved memorabilia to get a feel for what is was really like to live in the 1940s, and remember to leave room for dessert
Justine’s serves meals from scratch, made with care
Sunday, April 7, 2013
A culinary adventure was in order, and so my husband and I ventured far from home one recent night in search of dinner. But what we found at Justine’s in Cobleskill wasn’t far from home at all — in fact, it felt like we’d stepped into a neighbor’s home.
Merry Monk provides unique taste of Belgian cuisine
Sunday, March 31, 2013
Recently, the Spa City dining scene gained a new feather in its cap with the addition of The Merry Monk, a Belgian restaurant that’s an offshoot of the eatery of the same name in downtown Albany
Smith’s of Cohoes serves comfort food in evocative setting
Sunday, March 24, 2013
We had a wonderful meal for a reasonable price with good service in a historic setting. Smith’s serves standards like seafood fra diavolo and chicken cordon bleu, and home cooked meals like slow-roasted turkey, pot roast, meatloaf, and calf’s liver.
Grecian Gardens Greek specialties are winning choice
Sunday, March 17, 2013
Grecian Gardens is a family-friendly restaurant that serves crowd-pleasing cuisine at reasonable prices. It wasn’t all Greek, as we expected, but we found that’s what they’re best at.
Taiwan Noodle offers authentic, superior Chinese dishes
Sunday, March 10, 2013
With this in mind, I was drawn to Taiwan Noodle on a recent blustery evening, where I found warm comfort, delicious food and a great deal, too.
Route 67 Store and Cafe a homey spot for breakfast, lunch
Sunday, March 3, 2013
It looks like just a gas station if you’re whizzing down Route 67 at 55 miles per hour, but if you slow down you’ll see it’s a small country cafe and specialty goods shop. It’s the Route 67 Country Store and Cafe, and it’s worth a look.
Druthers gives unexpected touches to familiar fare
Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013
The menu isn’t tremendously long, but it’s innovative for sure. This isn’t just your typical burgers-and-beer place, though they do have a selection of burgers as well as a list of house-brewed beers.
TJ’s Cafe lives up to expectations ... and then some
Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013
I’m glad TJ’s came to my attention so I could tell you how nice it is. When you’re thinking of Applebee’s or those similar places, do yourself a favor and go to TJ’s instead for homemade food.
HALFMOON
Halfmoon Sandwich shop great for homesick downstaters
Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013
Over the drink coolers in the bright and brand-new, expanded Halfmoon Sandwich & Salad Shoppe hang two small signs. One says “Clifton Park,” the other, “Long Island.” They bring lots of good things to the Capital Region from the Island.
JONESVILLE
Shirley’s comes up short
Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013
When a new eatery opens in a small town or hamlet, you’re always rooting for it to do well, to become a beloved local fixture. But eating at the new Shirley’s Café felt like rooting for the New York Islanders: We wanted so badly for them to do well, but on this occasion, at least, they came up short.
