The building of a Wal-Mart distribution center in Johnstown, several miles from the nearest Thruway exit — causing an estimated 1,700 heavy trucks to pass through the village of Fonda daily causing traffic, noise, dust and infrastructure damage — was a mistake. Now Fulton County, where the distribution center is located, wants to fix the problem by creating a bypass that would take truck traffic around Fonda.
 

Truckers already pay enough to use roads

This is in response to the recent opinions by Mark Scribner (“Tolls better than gas taxes; make truckers pay fair share”) and Gabriel Roth (“Get the federal government out of highway development”), who want to remove federal control of the Highway Trust Fund and allow states to collect tolls.
