What a group of friends didn’t realize when they took over a dingy bar with no name was their business venture would transform Caroline Street’s makeup from a grungy side street into a bustling commercial corridor some consider the Spa City’s Bourbon Street.
V.E. Day, going off at 19-1, stormed down the stretch to nose out Wicked Strong at the wire and win the 145th running of the Travers Saturday at Saratoga Race Course. Both horses were trained by Jimmy Jerkins.
Sometimes called the fourth leg of the Triple Crown, the Travers brings 40,000 to 60,000 people to the city. Many consider it the pinnacle of the racing season and a point where the action in the Spa City’s downtown reaches a fever pitch.
